NEW interactive CPD across the fields of orthopaedic & soft tissue surgery + capsule endoscopy!

This year BSAVA are teaming up with Infiniti Medical and Orthomed to offer a new selection of practical CPD learning opportunities adjunct to the congress itself. The new digital format of the congress lends itself to utilising new modes of offering safe, socially distanced, interactive, practical education.... These sessions certainly tick all these boxes!

Included in the fees listed below, a full training set will be sent to your address for your use during the session. Each training set consists of the items required for the practical component of the course.

Please see below as to how you can further explore aspects of orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery and a new non invasive imaging technology in the informative, interactive video CPD sessions below.

Stifle disease: cranial cruciate ligament disease

Monday 19 April 2021 | 9:00AM - 1:00PM | Speaker Scott Rutherford

This workshop covers aspects of one of the most commonly seen surgical conditions that you’ll see in your practice – cranial cruciate ligament disease. On the workshop we’ll review various options available to treat CCL disease in practice and we’ll concentrate on procedure in particular: Modified Maquet Procedure. This course will cover the MMP procedure in detail, utilising lecture based learning, Q&A, case examples and also practical components. 3D anatomical models, real instrumentation & implants will be sent directly to registrants for use/practice during the interactive practical components. After the course, the models and implants can be kept by participants for demo during consults.

Course Agenda

  • Pathology and diagnosis of cranial cruciate ligament disease
  • Treatment options for CCL disease and meniscal injury
  • OrthoFoam™ – the bone ingrowth implant
  • MMP technique
  • Key steps of procedure
  • MMP variations
  • Difficult cases
  • Dealing with complications
  • MMP sawbone practical

Stifle disease: patellar luxation

Monday 19 April 2021 | 2:00PM - 5:00PM | Speaker Scott Rutherford

Patellar luxation is one of the most common orthopaedic conditions seen within clinics. RidgeStop™ is employed as an adjunct procedure when re-alignment operations such as tibial tuberosity transposition or much less commonly distal femoral ostectomy have been performed. The aim of the surgery is to make sure that the patellar slides up and down within its groove, without slipping to one side or the other; the cause of discomfort and lameness. Unlike other procedures for patellar luxation where the joint surface has to be cut, this is a much less traumatic procedure, as well as being more effective. This course will cover use of the RidgeStop™ in detail utilising lecture based learning, Q&A, case examples and also practical components. 3D anatomical models, real instrumentation & real implants will be sent directly to registrants for use/practice during the interactive practical components. After the course, the models and implants can be kept by participants for demo during consults.

Course Agenda

  • Patellar luxation pathophysiology
  • Patellar luxation including tibial tuberosity transposition
  • The concept of RidgeStop™
  • RidgeStop™ and TTT sawbone practical

Capsule endoscopy in veterinary practice

Tuesday 20 April 2021 | 5:00PM - 6:00PM | Speaker Alice Defarges

This session will focus on a new non invasive imaging technology requiring no anaesthesia, sedation, restriction of movement or expensive capital equipment and will discuss its role in assessing GI mucosa. GI bleeding and other GI diseases that can be diagnosed using capsule endoscopy (CE) will be discussed.

The goals of this session are to:

  1. Provide an overview of the role of CE in human & veterinary GI diagnostics
  2. Offer a review of the most recent, cutting edge studies in veterinary literature
  3. Introduce the participants to a new minimally invasive GI imaging technology - ALICAM
  4. Offer case studies & examples to elaborate

Course agenda

  • How to operate & administer ALICAM
  • Indications/ contraindications of ALICAM in general practice
  • Patient preparation
  • Utilizing the interpretation/ reporting service
  • How to integrate CE into traditional GI work up

Introduction to surgical stapling

Wednesday 21 April | 5:00PM - 6:30PM | Speaker Sarit Dhupa

The goal of this course is to introduce the participants to the stapling equipment and techniques necessary to perform procedures such as lung lobectomy, liver lobectomy, nephrectomy, gastric resection etc. The lecture will present indications, proper patient selection and follow-up care in patients. Case examples will be used to elaborate. A hands- on lab will follow in which participants will have opportunity to load, unload, use & fire the handles. Following completion of the course, attendees should feel confident with handling and use of staplers & their various applications.

Course agenda

Plate osteosynthesis

Friday 24 April 2021 | 1:00PM - 5:00PM | Speaker Bruce Nwadike

The SOP™ is a hugely versatile locking plate fixation system that requires minimal instrumentation and removes the need for expensive investment. The system can be thought of as an internal – external fixator and is applicable in a huge array of fracture repairs. Under a board certified surgeon’s instruction, registrants will cover all aspects of SOP through both lecture based learning and interactive practical components. During the practical sessions, registrants will use 3D anatomical models, real instrumentation & real implants which will be sent directly to registrants’ home or workplace for use during the course. After the course, the models and implants can be kept by participants for further practice, demo during consults etc.

Course Agenda

  • Fracture and implant biomechanics
  • Bone healing principles
  • Assessment of fracture patient
  • Fracture score
  • Internal fracture fixation
  • How to apply non locking plates
  • Locking plates and screws
  • How SOP™ differs to existing implant systems
