Thyroid disease in dogs & cats

Summary

Diagnosing hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can be challenging. Results obtained form thyroid function tests can be normal in animals with thyroid disease and abnormal in those without such disease. Reliable interpretation is dependent on knowing the factors that can influence the results include assay methodology, storage conditions, age, breed and sex, the thyroid pathology present and non-thyroidal diseases or drug therapies. Using case examples this SGS will cover these aspects allowing you to more reliably diagnose thyroid disease in dogs and cats.

Key learning objectives:

1. Be able to select the most appropriate thyroid tests in individual cases

2. Know the non-thyroidal factors that affect thyroid test results

3. Demonstrate enhanced interpretive skills for discordant test results
